Manufacturing Certifications

Inherent to the Banner Center’s aim to build a cohesive, statewide “production technician” certification culture among the educational-manufacturing community, is Florida’s commitment to use the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) Production Technician certification to further that aim. The state workforce system has invested in the Banner Center to create and offer training curricula, which prepares individuals in the manufacturing workforce pipeline to sit for the MSSC certification. The certification serves as a key element in the state’s career and technical education system articulation pathway.

Since “certification” connotes the need for “testing,” the Banner Center consortium and MSSC are working together to build the necessary MSSC Assessment Center infrastructure within Florida to accommodate that need. Currently, there are 12 registered assessment centers throughout the state.

MSSC, a national, industry-led organization took the initiative more than a decade ago to identify the foundational knowledge/skills sets requisite to developing and sustaining the nation’s high-performance manufacturing production technician workforce. Their efforts culminated in the creation of the Production Technician Certification System. Integral to the system are:

  • MSSC Production Standards: download
  • The curriculum—aligned with the production standards blueprint—which provides the student with the portable production knowledge/skills sets applicable to production technician jobs in the manufacturing industry’s 14 sub-industries and prepares the student to sit for the MSSC Production Technician certification examination
  • The Production Technician certification, which is awarded to those persons passing the certification examination’s four, two-hour long assessments: Production and Processes, Safety, Quality Practices and Continuous Improvement, and Maintenance Awareness. Assessments can only be taken at registered MSSC Assessment Centers.
  • Documentation and Certification of Individuals. The documentation system consists of the following:
    • An MSSC Production Technician certificate
    • A Recognition Award for earning a passing score on each assessment
    • An assessment score report indicating assessment score and related areas for improvement
    • An Employer Diagnostic Tool, which benchmarks assessment results for 10 or more assessment takers—from an individual company—against national assessment scores
  • Valued benefits for Florida’s manufacturers and production workforce, which include:
    • A flexible, trainable and motivated knowledge-based workforce
    • Decreased recruitment costs due to the availability of a credentialed workforce pool
    • A dynamic element of the state’s workforce investment system that facilitates recruiting, motivating, and retaining qualified employees
    • Knowledge/skill standards that the educational community can use to keep their curricula aligned with the evolving needs of the manufacturing industry
